Every Liberty student can recite the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. We have students from kindergarten through eighth grade in our school, from different cultures – yet every one of them finds plenty of situations to relate to.
Character Counts! was founded in 1993 by a former lawyer and law professor named Michael Josephson. He was already very successful studying ethics among adults, but it was clear how much good could be done by laying the foundation early. That same year, the U.S. Senate and the White House began their annual practice of declaring the third week of October as National Character Counts! Week.
Since then, the program has grown into the largest, most successful character development program in the world. Nearly 1,000 organizations now bring the program to more than 7 million young people, and we at Liberty Traditional – Phoenix are proud to be among them.
Character Counts! is managed by the Joseph & Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics, named for the founder’s parents. (What other proof do you need that they raised a good child?) It’s the perfect recognition of every parent’s most basic role in shaping their children – a challenge that we’re happy to partner with and support you in, every week of the year.
